Why You Can’t “Just Stop Overthinking”: Understanding the Stress Cycle

If you've ever been told to “just stop overthinking,” you probably know it’s not that simple.
When you're stuck replaying conversations, worrying about the future, or analyzing every possible outcome, your brain isn't trying to make your life harder. It's trying to protect you.
The problem is that sometimes that protective system gets stuck in overdrive.
What Is Overthinking?
Overthinking often looks like:
• Replaying past conversations
• Worrying about things that haven't happened yet
• Constantly second guessing decisions
• Struggling to relax, even when nothing is wrong
• Feeling mentally exhausted at the end of the day
Many people assume overthinking is simply a thinking problem. In reality, it's often connected to anxiety, stress, and nervous system dysregulation.
As a therapist serving the west side of Cleveland and providing virtual therapy throughout Ohio, I often work with clients who feel frustrated that they "know better" logically but still can't stop worrying.
The Link Between Overthinking and Your Nervous System
When your brain perceives stress, uncertainty, or potential danger, it begins searching for answers.
The more activated your nervous system becomes, the harder it is to think clearly. Instead, your mind may become stuck in loops of worry, self criticism, and "what if" scenarios.
This is especially common among individuals experiencing anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, life transitions, or burnout.
Overthinking isn't always a sign that something is wrong with you. Often, it's a sign that your nervous system is working overtime to keep you safe.
Why You Can't Think Your Way Out of Anxiety
One of the most frustrating experiences is knowing something logically while feeling something completely different emotionally.
You might tell yourself:
"I already handled that."
"Everything is fine."
"I don't need to worry about this."
Yet your body continues to feel tense, restless, or on edge.
That's because anxiety doesn't only live in your thoughts. It also lives in your nervous system.
When your body is activated, logic alone may not be enough to create a sense of calm.
Ways to Support Your Nervous System
While everyone's experience is different, some strategies that can help regulate the nervous system include:
• Gentle movement such as walking or stretching
• Deep breathing exercises
• Spending time outdoors
• Practicing mindfulness
• Connecting with supportive people
• Creating moments of rest throughout your day
• Limiting constant exposure to stress and overwhelm
These tools aren't about eliminating anxiety overnight. Instead, they help communicate safety to your body and create opportunities for your nervous system to settle.
